The people of tomorrow and today’s challenges
21st century is a century of technological advancements. New technologies and technology in general, more than ever dominate the discourse on the future: on the one hand, they are promoted as essential for a successful regional economic policy in global competition, criticized on the other hand as a basis for a possible dystopia of complete control and manipulation. At the same technique is mostly used as a given, Secondary accepted, its rationale and scope for development are reflected rarely sufficient. This is Technology Review now illuminate in a new essay series. The North's argument is based not only on questionable assumptions - it is particularly old-fashioned and adjusted our view of really significant changes.
Today people are different than yesterday, and man of tomorrow will again be different. That comes from what we think, read and write (the culture) as we organize our relations with each other (the policy) as we integrate the things around us in our lives (the technique) and also by the many interactions between all of this.
How we became who we are, it can be told fascinating stories. As always subsequent reconstruction of these stories show not to say that we could plan the impact of the historical and technological changes predicted in ourselves and who we are. Technology has always helped us to solve some problems, while other has ever produced before. At one point our monitoring capacity has been expanded to other increases the pressure to conform. By focusing on new equipment or procedures gradually appropriated and assigned a permanent place in our world, we have changed us in a more or less subtle way, together with our technology, our culture and our social organization.
Now, go to the people of the future do not tell the stories. We may possibly ask important questions, including these:
What do we know about the people of the future - in terms of culture, politics or technology?
How could (and should) we take influence on how people develop the future - if that's even possible?
If all we have is more or less improbable scenarios of technological development, at which point we should take them seriously?
These questions are rarely made explicit. But even if they answered only implicitly, can win or lose credibility, can interfere in a responsible or irresponsible manner in the social negotiations.
The extents of responsibility and credibility are at stake, can be the basis of three possible approaches to the "People of the Future" show. This could be the second and the third approach the "regional perspectives" of the USA and Europe map:
We can accept visions of the future development of man as an opportunity to make timeless philosophical questions.
We can provide the people of the future to the fore, as we deal with what science and technology have in store for us (as in the U.S. initiative "NBIC Converging Technologies for Improving Human Performance" - NBIC stands for "nano-, bio-, info-Cogno-").
We can look for future solutions for solving today's problems, knowing that these solutions for the people of tomorrow come up with new problems (such as in the European approach "CTEKS: Converging Technologies for European Knowledge Societies".
The difference between the second and the third approach, however, has only regional differences in perspectives on activity - it is much more fundamental nature. In short: The second approach is rejected, and only the third is with the traditions and values of both the U.S. and Europe agreed.
